5 Best Coffee Shops in Cape Town

Cape Town has felt like a second home to me for nearly a decade, and during that time, I’ve fallen deeply in love with the city’s vibrant café culture. The following cafés have been my sanctuaries, workplaces, and meeting spots with friends. They’ve seen me through countless cups of coffee, delicious pastries, and moments of joy and contemplation, through good and challenging days. Each one holds a special place in my heart, with unique characteristics and specialities that make them stand out.

1 - South Yeaster

South Yeaster, run by the dynamic sibling duo Brode and Amber, is my preferred stop when coming from a trail run at Constantia Neck or on my way to Llandudno Beach. Nestled in the heart of Hout Bay, it’s a paradise for pastry lovers. Honestly, their Almond Croissant tastes like it’s from another planet. Brode, with his incredible talent, is often seen around the bakery, adding a personal touch that makes every visit feel special. Their bread and pastries are nothing short of legendary. Made from sourdough, they are incredibly light and won't leave you feeling overly full—just happy and satisfied.

South Yeaster has become a beloved stopover for all the sportives around the city, you will see a couple of cyclists, hikers, and runners around. The bakery features both indoor and outdoor seating, complete with a cosy fireplace and ample space to work from with your laptop. Whether you're grabbing an almond croissant or indulging in one of their juicy sandwiches, South Yeaster is a treat.

2 - The Strangers Club

This little oasis has been my favourite place since I first travelled to South Africa in 2016 and will always hold the No.1 spot in my heart.

The Strangers Club has changed and evolved over the years, but its initial sparkle, brought to life by the wonderful people who create and maintain it, remains the same. Amidst the hustle and bustle of Cape Town’s vibrant city life, this café offers a serene escape to relax and unwind.

One of my all-time favourites is their Nutty Bowl, a smoothie bowl that tastes like dessert for breakfast. They use the freshest ingredients and put so much love and dedication into their seasonally changing menu. Some classics, like the Nutty Bowl, never leave the menu though. I can also highly recommend the house salad—super fresh and nutritious.

After enjoying a delicious breakfast or lunch, I love strolling through the space to find a new favourite piece made by local brands like Muse, Lorne, or ROF. In the backyard, you'll find some real treasures, including a stunning selection of African art, fabrics, and crafts. I recently picked up some beautiful Kikoys from Kenya—colourful clothes with broad stripes, perfect for the next beach day.

I also met my long-term friend from Kenya, Joan, here. She has become a staple at the Café and a very close friend of mine. Together, we explore Cape Town’s food scene and try new culinary delights.

3 - Houtbay Coffee

Hout Bay Coffee, the hidden gem in the heart of Hout Bay, offers a cosy and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for relaxing and enjoying exceptional coffee. I love the seats by the river, as all the outside seating merges beautifully into nature, giving the place its rustic charm.

Their coffee is brewed to perfection, with a focus on quality and flavour. For all @southyeaster almond croissant lovers: they sell SY almond croissants on Sundays when SY is closed 😉.

Another must-try is their almond/orange cake, offering a refreshing and satisfying blend of flavours—it's to die for. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick coffee or settling in for a relaxing morning, Hout Bay Coffee feels like a home away from home.

Origin Coffee Roasting

Origin Coffee has been one of my go-to spots in Cape Town for as long as The Strangers Club. I’ve spent countless hours here, either working remotely or simply enjoying the sight of baristas performing their magic. As one of Cape Town’s pioneering coffee roasters, this café is truly a haven for coffee lovers like me.

Located in a beautiful historic brick warehouse in De Waterkant, the industrial ambience perfectly complements the café's charm. Joel Singer, the founder, originally from Canada, moved to Cape Town in 1997. His passion for quality coffee and bringing together diverse talents from around the world is truly inspiring. Joel set up a Barista Academy to lay the foundation for South Africa's coffee industry. They've trained over 3,500 baristas, including 5 SA champions. It’s been amazing to witness so many talented baristas who started at Origin and used it as their stepping stone in the coffee world.

With a wide variety of single-origin beans and expertly crafted brews, Origin Coffee Roasting offers an exceptional coffee experience. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and always eager to help you find your perfect brew, making each visit a delight.

Besides their amazing coffee, they also have a fantastic selection of breakfast and lunch options. It’s my go-to spot for casual business meetings or just grabbing a coffee.

Between Us

Between Us is another one of my favourite coffee spots in Cape Town. Located on Bree Street, this charming café combines stylish décor with a warm and inviting atmosphere. The use of warm colours, wood, and candles creates a cosy vibe, the perfect place to relax and enjoy a good cup of coffee.

The café offers a variety of delicious breakfast and lunch options. One of my favourites is the polenta pancake with mascarpone butter, blackberry, and bay—just thinking of it makes my mouth water! Their menu changes seasonally, ensuring that there is always something new and exciting to try.

The beautiful interior design, tasteful art, and fresh flowers create a delightful ambience. Whether you're meeting friends or simply enjoying some alone time, Between Us is a delightful spot. The great food and welcoming environment make it a standout in Cape Town’s vibrant café scene.
