Top 5 Cafés in Amsterdam

When I moved to Amsterdam in 2021, the city was still in lockdown, and COVID was still very much a reality. Coming from Germany—a country known for its strict rules—the more relaxed approach in the Netherlands felt like a breath of fresh air. Coffee shops (not the kind you get high in, haha) became my sanctuary and the only place where I could connect with others. Working remotely, my daily coffee break became a cherished ritual, and it was through these moments that I built meaningful connections. It’s no surprise that most of my friends in Amsterdam are baristas.

Amsterdam is a vibrant and enchanting city, not just because of its charming canals and beautiful architecture, but because of its people who embody a live-and-let-live philosophy. You can find cosy cafes nestled in its narrow streets or perched by a canal, each offering a unique slice of the city's soul.

Amsterdam’s café culture is vibrant and full of hidden gems. These are just a few of my favourites. Whether you're a local or a visitor, I hope you get to explore and enjoy these delightful spots as much as I do—and don’t forget your raincoat! 😉

Bakkerij Louf

Bakkerij Loof is my absolute favorite spot in Amsterdam. This cozy bakery is a haven for bread and pastry lovers. My favourite spot is next to the counter watching the bakers work the focaccia dough. My Italian heart beats stronger when I see their dedication and skill, the dusty fingers from the flour. My go-to treat is the fig/walnut/honey bun with Old Dutch cheese on top. Mamma mia, it's pure indulgence! The combination of the sweet figs, crunchy walnuts, and rich honey with the savory cheese is a match made in heaven. If you're looking for a cozy spot to enjoy some baked delights, Bakkerij Loof is the place to be.

Saint Jean

The wait is totally worth it at Saint Jean for their heavenly pistachio Cruffins. These flaky, buttery pastries filled with creamy pistachio goodness are simply divine. One of my favorite baristas and friends, Antoine, manages the place, which is another reason I love visiting. It’s always a joy to chat with him while waiting for my coffee and pastry. Fun fact: I followed Antoine from De Groentemeesters to Saint Jean, where he used to work as a Barista. Now he manages the café at Saint Jean and still makes a really good coffee.

Insider tip: They sell their most delicious pistachio creme, which they use for the Cruffins, online. I’ve never had a better one! So, if you want to recreate that experience at home, don’t miss out on this treat.

De Groentemeesters

De Groentemeesters holds a special place in my heart as one of my first go-to cafes when I moved to Amsterdam during the Covid lockdown. The cafe is located right next to the famous Albert Cuyp market on a charming narrow street. The owner runs the cafe with such a personal touch, creating a warm atmosphere and offering genuine hospitality that makes you feel right at home.

With its charming terrace, it’s a perfect spot to unwind next to the hustle and bustle of the busy market. Their brioche with scrambled eggs is a winner—light, fluffy, and moist. I also adore the unique tableware they use; it adds an extra touch of charm to the whole experience. The terrace is a great place to soak up some sun while enjoying a delicious meal.

Note: Sadly, De Groentemeesters has closed, but I’m keeping it on this list because of the special place it holds in my heart.

Scandinavian Embassy

The Scandinavian Embassy is renowned for its cinnamon buns and excellent coffee. These sweet little fluffy buns are simply irresistible. Living close by, I loved getting one of those buns warm and fresh out of the oven. Right next to Sarphati Park, it’s the perfect little treat while enjoying a walk.

During rainy days (and there are more than enough rainy days in Amsterdam), the cafe invites you to sit in one of the cosy corners inside. The ambience here is cosy and welcoming, making it a perfect place to relax, meet with friends, and indulge in a cinnamon bun and a good cup of coffee. The combination of great pastries and top-notch coffee makes the Scandinavian Embassy a must-visit for anyone in Amsterdam.

De Laatste Kruimel

De Laatste Kruimel is a sweet hidden and not-so-hidden spot with a charming canal view terrace. It's the perfect spot to experience Amsterdam as you literally sit on the canal if you’re lucky enough to snag one of the few spots on the tiny terrace. It's worth the wait!

Their windows attract you immediately, packed with all the sweet pastries. The whole place feels like being in a fairy tale bakery. From scones to cakes, every item here tastes divine. Whether it’s sunny or rainy, this spot has its unique charm.
